Apples may be the new superfood for building up muscle – but only if you eat the peel.

Mice that were fed ursolic acid, stored in peel, had bigger muscles and suffered less muscle wasting.

It also reduced fat, cholesterol and blood sugar, the University of Iowa discovered. It could now be used to treat diabetes and muscle wasting in humans.

Study author Dr Christopher Adams said: “The saying goes that ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.”
