How to care for perfect hair

Your bathroom shelves are filled with fancy shampoos, expensive conditioners, hair gels and the works, yet you complain of unmanageable hair. The reason: you are not using the right products

Sometimess you refuse to part with products that you've been using since childhood, but you really should bid adieu to Johnson's Baby Shampoo if you are in your 20s. And thanks to the Greenhouse Effect and pollution even the climate has changed, so you should change your products too.

Lady, all you need for lustrous tresses are the right products and a proper haircare regime. So follow these basics:

Listen to your mother
Do you follow your mother's advice and oil your hair at least once a week? Or boil neem leaves in a litre of water and wash your hair with it to get rid of dandruff? Fast-paced lifestyles leave little time for such home remedies.
But massaging your hair with hair oil is a must to boost circulation in your scalp and flaunt healthy hair.

How to be a diva
Who said only Sushmita Sen and her colleagues in Bollywood use the world's most nourishing hair creams and potions?

After every oiling, shampoo and conditioning, apply a hair serum through the length of your air and it will be lustrous like a diva's. Moreover, hair serum also acts like a protective barrier against environmental hazards.

Mumbai-based hair specialist Imraan Sheikh explains, "It is very important to use a serum because it protects your hair from UV rays and pollution. Serums contain silicon which seals hair cuticles to prevent any damage. Even more important, is using the right serum for your hair type otherwise your hair will look limp and dull."

Sheikh recommends these steps to apply serum the right way:

  1. Take a small (coin size) amount of serum in the palm of your hand.
  2. Flip your hair upside down and rub in the serum.
  3. You need to apply it through the length of your hair and not the scalp.
  4. Apply really well with your palms because your body heat activates the serum.
  5. Always ask your hair stylist or a hair specialist to suggest a serum that will suit your hair type and texture.

A conditioner is like a moisturiser
Spend, no, splurge on the right conditioner. Choose a light conditioner for fine hair and a heavy one to settle frizzy locks. Just like a serum, a conditioner seals the cuticles to keep your hair damage-free.

Sheikh also recommends leave-in conditioners that will constantly combat pollution and environmental factors that damage your hair. Once again, he stresses on choosing the right leave in conditioner for your hair type to avoid any undesirable effect.

If hair is clean...it will shine
The secret is having the right brush and the right shampoo. Don't just buy what's in. Pick a shampoo with a soap base rather than a detergent base (check bottle labels). And pick a wide-toothed brush with a soft base.

Unless you want to go bald at 30, keep your scalp clean and free from dandruff! If need be, wash your hair everyday to keep your scalp clean.

Limp is out
Everyone knows you spent a fortune on flattening out your unruly tresses last year. In 2010, however, poker straight hair is passe. So, get a volumising mousse suited for your hair type.
Sheikh says, "Short, curly bobs are really hot this season."

Keep your mane happy and you will look like a princess!
