The sweltering heat, the ever-rising humidity and harsh sunrays can wreck havoc on your skin. While wearing a cap can provide some relief, it’s impossible to stay completely protected and avoid the sunspots, rashes and fine lines. But don’t let that ruin your summer. By going in for a suitable facial routine you can cleanse, smooth and moisturise your face keeping it glowing throughout.

Skin esthetician Diya Dembla says as the weather warms up, there is a lot of build-up in the skin and hence treatments should be focussed on cleansing and cooling. “I recommend water-based ingredients such as cucumbers, coconut water and even cold milk and dahi that are excellent for the skin. Since mangoes are in season one can try a mango facial that’s ripe in antioxidants, vitamins and iron. These restore the glow and perk up dull tired skin,” says Diya. She suggests getting a skin consultation done as everyone has different genes and a different lifestyle and accordingly should go in for a facial that suits them. She uses a lot of fresh aloe (which is soothing for dry skin), figs, watercress and even thyme, rosemary and neem that keep rashes away.

This is the season to take extra precautions for your skin says Dr Sweta Sinha, Consulting Cosmetologist. “Some of the common problems people face are acne breakouts due to excessive sweating which leads to blockage of the oil glands. Another common problem is pigmentation or tanning due to the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun, which result in dull and patchy skin. Go for refreshing organic facials of fresh cucumbers, beetroots and carrots or strawberries or aloe vera. There are also cooling sea minerals facials that rejuvenate skin and help get rid of the summer tan,” adds Dr Sinha. She says using sun block is a must as is exfoliating the skin once every three days to remove dead cells and clogged pores.

During this season, there is no better way to cool off than by taking a plunge in the pool. However, Dr Rohini Wadhwani cosmetologist says those who swim must remember that chlorine can cause extensive dryness in the skin because it speeds up moisture loss. “Keeping in mind the changes that the skin undergoes during summer, one can go in for oil control treatments, sun tan removal treatments, skin peels to tackle pigmentation and skin polishing. A healthy diet and lifestyle are essential with lots of fruits and a high fibre diet. Those suffering from acne should eat foods containing zinc and avoid those rich in iodine.” She further suggests those fighting acne and pimples to use products containing tea tree oil, aloe vera, fullers earth, witch hazel and zinc as they fight the bacteria.

Summer leads to increased UV radiation, thus extrinsic aging, roughened skin, and darkening, says Dr Satish Bhatia, dermatologist. “Proper daily skin care is essential in improving the appearance and quality of aging skin. Retinoid creams are a preferred choice as they improve collagen synthesis, which results in greater skin strength and elasticity thus reducing fine wrinkles. Topical antioxidants which include vitamin c, lipoic acid and green tea can help.”
