Gone are the days when only women obsessed about their looks and skin. Today’s metrosexual man is as conscious about his looks as any other woman and isn’t ashamed of admitting the fact that he goes to the spa to pamper himself or that he follows a skin care regime. Men’s skin is different from women and they also have their own set of problems related to it.

According to spa owner, Dr Sunita Dube, men’s skin is different since they have male hormone testosterone because of which they have rougher skin than women and a difference in the pH level. “Men should use an alcohol-free toner, which tightens the pores and helps balancing the pH level. They should use a moisturiser specially prepared for men, which contains antioxidants and minerals. Some of the most common skin problems faced by men are acne, folliculitis and fungal infections, which are more common in men than in women,” she says.

“Since your skin is a reflection of your internal health, one needs to take care of their lifestyle to have healthy skin. If you’re into outdoor sports like cricket, golf, football or even swimming, don’t forget to apply a sunscreen of SPF 20-25 about 20 minutes before you step out. Wash your face at least twice a day with a good soap-free cleansing face wash and apply sunscreen regularly,” adds Dr Dube.

Although most men may find it a little odd to follow a skin care regime, cosmetologist Dr Meenakshi Agarwal emphasises on the use of a mild soap and water to clean your skin. “A light moisturiser, sunscreen lotion, plenty of fluid intake, a healthy, balanced diet and avoiding excessive nicotine and alcohol intake will give you healthy skin,” she says.

She also suggests you follow these steps to reduce shaving rash and boils after shaving:

  • Moisturise your skin with a hydrating gel or an emollient cream like shea butter or even aloe vera at least half an hour before shaving.
  • Use a razor with twin blades for a better shave, if possible with an emollient strip attached.
  • Use an antiseptic after shaving to keep your skin in good condition. Use a product that has sandalwood in it. Sandalwood has soothing and calming properties and reduces the dryness caused due to the alcoholic content of an after shave lotion.

Dr Agarwal suggests these simple home remedies

  • Rub curd mixed with a few drops of lime juice for tanned or pigmented skin.
  • Besan (gram flour) or oatmeal can be used as effective exfoliators to remove dead skin.
  • Cucumber slices, tea bags or grated potato slices work wonders on dark circles.

Dr Dube suggests this simple face pack that you can use at home

  • 1 tsp curd
  • 1 tsp multani mitti
  • 4 - 5 drops of honey
  • 1 pinch of amba haldi
  • 4 - 5 drops of almond oil

Make a paste of these ingredients and apply it on your face. Wash it off with cold water after 20 minutes. This simple face pack reduces tanning, wrinkles and makes the skin softer.
