Mumbaiites are opting for the convenience of a home gym for a healthier lifestyle

A gym at home is no longer a luxury that only the super-rich can afford. It is not a far-off dream anymore. There are many households who have incorporated a gym, however small, within their homes just for the benefits it offers. We spoke to actors Tusshar Kapoor, Jackky Bhagnani and singer Babul Supriyo about their gyms.

I love working out and the treadmill gives me a high! Having a gym at home is definitely an advantage because of the convenience. Since our gym is outside the main house it is easier for my friends and staff to use the facility as well.

Tusshar Kapoor has a gym built in the front courtyard of his palatial bungalow in Juhu. “A gym at home is extremely beneficial and now I have the luxury of gymming whenever I want, for as long as I want, in the comforts of my home,” smiles Tusshar. He is all body and brawn now, almost unrecognisable from his ‘cute kid on the block’ days of Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai.

The perfectly fit athletic body is swathed in a light gray T-shirt and we can see the rippling muscles as he pumps the irons to some fast foot-tapping music, while his trainer Pramod Dadlani guides him. The mirrors all around magnify the interiors of the gym. Tusshar reveals, “I am very much into fitness and am very regular about my training.” Talking about his favourite equipment in the gym Tusshar says, “The treadmill gives me a high, a rush.”

He is a very sports–oriented person. He says, “For five days I do weights and the other two days in the week I do cardio, yoga or play squash. I was under trained around two years back and Pramod changed my body type. I tease him by calling him a ‘kasai’ because he is very strict. I do not have a body-builder type of a body , rather, mine is athletic. The bodybuilder physique is just not in my genes.”

All the balanced dieting and the rigorous workout the fine actor is following shows, and we will all get to see a new Tusshar in his forthcoming movies.

If you are aspiring for a gym at home don’t buy hi-fi equipment in the very beginning. Upgrade and improve as you train. Your gym should inspire you to workout not intimidate you in any way.

Many would not know that singer Babul Supriyo is a fantastic cook and they say that people who cook well, like eating well too. “I was growing fat and needed to lose weight. The success of Kaho Na Pyar Hai helped me earn money, so I enrolled myself into a posh gym in Juhu. But then just ‘joining’ didn’t make me lose weight! A home-gym was something that became necessary to continue my workouts easily and to fulfil my desire to be healthy and slim.” He bought all the equipment from Toronto. “My trainer Shyam Rahate and my interior designer Paresh Brahmbhatt helped me create this gym,” says Babul.

He confesses, “I still have a long way to go to reach my goal but my home-gym inspires me to keep at it.” He has a multi-gym, a treadmill, a crosstrainer, a cycle, a spinning bike that he purchased recently, weights and benches. “I also have a steam, jacuzzi and massage shower unit that I use to reward myself whenever I manage a good hard workout,” he smiles. He believes that just like everything else, gymming is not about how long you are at it but rather what all you are doing. “I try and stick to my regime,” he says. Babul is looking forward to his maiden film as a hero that will be released next Friday.


Jackky Bhagnani

Five years ago I was 130 kg and worked very hard to lose it. Now, gymming is something that I just cannot do without. I believe exercising not only keeps one’s body fit but it also makes your skin actually glow with health.


Five years ago Jackky Bhagnani used to be 130kgs. And now as we look at the tall, slim and healthy Jackky, we realise that working out regularly and diligently can really make it all happen. If you thought those ‘before-after’ images we keep seeing in the advertisements are photoshopped, then think again. Jackky’s massive gym on the first floor of his 13-storied home, has his huge before-after posters pasted on the walls. He smiles, “I do not want to lose sight of what I had been earlier. It just encourages me to workout all the more sincerely.” The young hunk has the best of equipment and a space that would put even some so-called professional gyms to shame. You name it and his gym has it.

“My favourite is the treadmill. I am more of a freehand person. At one stretch, I do 45 minutes of non-stop exercising. There are two kinds of workout — crossfit and weights that I indulge in,” he says. His crossfit trainer is Dipesh and weight-lifting trainer is Elton. He always goes for a healthy diet. “By default my system does not allow me to pick up fried or unhealthy stuff. For me gymming is something that I just cannot do without. I cannot miss it. Along with my training, I also follow a certain prescribed diet,” he says.

So, go on create a gym at home and lead a healthier life. It’s not that tough.

GET THE BASIC HOME GYM

Everyone does not have the kind of budget a fancy home gym needs but that doesn’t mean you cannot own one! Here are a few basic pieces of exercise equipment for a home gym that are relatively inexpensive:

Exercise mat
This is a basic. Use it for ab workouts, toning exercises, yoga, Pilates or whatever your heart desires. If you don't have carpet, make sure you choose a no-slip mat.

Resistance bands and tubes
Resistance bands can give you a full body workout no matter where you go.

A dumbbell set
Extremely versatile and a good investment. Serious about burning fat and gaining muscle then this is a must-have

Barbells
This is for lifting heavier weights.

An aerobic step
Can be used for step aerobics or as a weight bench.

Bosu ball
This works very well for your abdominal workout and also improves your balance and core strength. You can use it for push-ups, back extensions, or lower-body exercises or as a weight bench.

Weight lifting gloves
To protect your hands from calluses, you’ll want a solid pair of weight lifting gloves made of fabric that allows sweat to evaporate.

Adjustable weight bench
You’ll need this for chest and back exercises, and you can even use it for a quick ab workout or some tricep dips.

Adjustable ankle weights
For working the stability muscles of the lower body invest in a quality pair of ankle weights for moves like standing leg lifts or leg extensions.
