What: Kaya Glow - microdermabrasion and re-hydration treatment
Where: Kaya Skin Clinic, Ghatkopar, Mumbai
How much: Rs1945

After putting my skin through the acid test - no facials/scrubs/beauty treatments for over a month, maximum exposure to the sun and a bout of dehydration to top it off - I took my oily, spotted face to Kaya.

While I was accommodated without a prior appointment, I was surprised to find that the in-house dermat didn't bother to check my skin type or give me a consult on whether the Kaya Glow was suited for me. I was duly escorted into one of their bright white spa rooms, and the moment I walked in I felt like I was at the dentist - what's with the vacuum pipe resembling a dentist's drill hovering over me.

If you are wondering what a pipe was doing there in the first place - well, let me tell you that Kaya Glow is a microdermabrasion and re-hydration treatment. What that actually means is that the therapist uses the tool that is the pipe to polish the skin and  a vacuum removes the damaged surface skin cells simultaneously.

Not your regular spa

Yes, this is a far cry from your cleansing-massage-scrub infused treatment at a beauty spa. Afterall, Kaya is a medical spa and these treatments are 'medical procedures'!

Moving on… A choice of wet eye pads - rose, cucumber or tea - were offered to me. I was suggested the cucumber since I have slight dark circles under my eyes.

The deep re-hydrating face-mask was applied on my face next. It felt nice and cool on my skin. After about half an hour, I had my Mission Impossible moment - the mask was peeled off with precision… My skin felt moisturised and refreshed.

While my face didn't look any different, it sure did feel different. The uneven texture of the skin was gone. And Anita, my therapist, gave me some good advice: Use sunscreen that had less SPF (15-20) in it since I had oily skin and go easy on the scrubs or exfoliants - oily or less sensitive skin types can exfoliate every second day.

Also, I was told to lay off face wash and any other beauty treatments for 12 to 24 hours. Not a difficult task, since two days after the treatment - my skin did have a new-fangled sheen. I felt like a smug snake that had just moulted out of its old skin. Hissss!
