Pregnancy and insomnia

Insomnia in pregnancy is common because your baby lives on a 24-hour clock. Read on to know what you should do

By Dr Miriam Stoppard

I am four months pregnant and can’t sleep. I lie listening to the hours chime on my clock and get up feeling exhausted. Please help.

Dr Miriam says:
Insomnia in pregnancy is common because your baby lives on a 24-hour clock, and his metabolism keeps going even when you want to sleep. Other causes of insomnia later in pregnancy include night sweats and a desire to empty your bladder more often, particularly during the third trimester.

Any form of exercise can help, so go for a half-hour walk every day, stopping if you feel tired. A warm bath and a hot milky drink at bedtime may help. Watch TV or read until you feel sleepy. Find a comfy position and try to stay cool.

Doctors rarely prescribe sleeping pills in pregnancy as they can cross the placenta affecting the baby.
