The comedian and actor’s ‘serious’ fitness beliefs

As told to Manisha Almadi Midha

Body
Fitness — "I don’t believe in going to the gym. I don’t know how people run on the treadmill in a closed gym. It’s shocking...err boring. I have been an athlete since my school days. There is a huge maidan near my house and since I am an early riser, I go their and do a bit of ‘Circuit Training’ for 45 minutes, thrice a week. My work out consists of push ups, planks and jumps. This keeps your body athletic, helps in muscle building, fat loss and heart fitness. At home, I skip for 20 minutes, thrice a week. These exercises don’t require any equipment, so I can do them even when travelling. And the most important point about workouts — if you want results, you have to sustain it.

Diet — I love food. Food is therapeutic. In fact I work out not for a great body but to be able to eat what I want. I am up by 6:30 – 7 am and begin my day with a bottle of water. My breakfast is 2 boiled eggs, oats with milk, chicken sausages, Marie biscuits and a cup of tea. I also have aloo paranthas once a week for breakfast. Lunch is a wholesome Indian meal — dal, sabzi, 3 rotis and curd. I avoid rice and am not a rice eater either. My evening snack includes freshly baked, healthy soya cookies/whole wheat cookies, green peas and sprouts with a cup of tea. I substitute Indian food with others for dinner. Since Im usually not at home, I order for fish or a beef steak and when I am in town, I have sushi at least thrice a week.

I have a sweet tooth and wrap up my meals with suji ka halwa. If not Indian then, I have a Bavarian Chocolate ice cream or cheese cake. Don’t limit yourself! I think everyone should have cheese cake at least once a week. It’s healthy, literally!

My workout staples are mango and papaya. Fruits are post work out. Another favourite workout food is pasta. What I don’t eat is processed/packaged food. I go easy on the carbs (to avoid the extra kilos). I don’t have hard drinks. I can’t handle more than a drink, so it’s usually beer or a glass of red wine for me.

Looking Good — Stay away from alcohol and the results will show on your skin— it will feel younger. Drink lots of water, it flushes out the toxins. Today’s generation neglects sleeping. Lack of sleep shows on your face — you develop dark eye circles and your skin looks tired. I make sure no matter where I am in the world I get my eight hours of sleep every day.

Mind
I have a house in Goa and I go there to unwind. Swimming at the beach rejuvenates me. I also find music calming. It’s therapeutic. I listen to jazz and play the guitar. I read a lot — mostly classics — Sherlock Holmes, Charles Dickens... at least two in a week. It helps me relax.

We feel the need to spend time with people, and chatter to beat our blues. Instead spend an hour on your own everyday and you will find more solace — it will help you connect with yourself.

Last but not the least when I make people laugh, it makes me happy. I decided I wanted to be a comedian at 21. But when I am on stage, I get the energy to perform. Now I am playing my first lead role in Aamir Khan’s Delhi Belly. I am excited.

Spirit
I am spiritual, not religious! I pray to God every night. I believe in instant karma — if you lie, you will fall sick the next week. My motto: laugh it out!"
