5 Neck pain myths busted

That pain in the neck always makes one irritable. These facts can help prevent you from making it worse

Myth – Neck pain can occur because of serious problems.

Fact – Most common causes of neck pain include poor posture at work, stooping or leaning while working at a computer, hunching over while working and overuse of neck muscles. Ageing can cause worn joints as in osteoarthritis of the neck; vertebral disk disorders or jerk injuries can give rise to neck pain.


Myth – Neck pain can be a sign of emergency. 
Fact – Rarely neck pain can be a sign of emergency. It gets better on its own within a few days. Short-term immobilisation, traction, pain medications and rest from time to time can help. 

 

Myth – Rest is the best way to get rid of your neck pain.

Fact – Short bed rest may help reduce acute pain however experts recommend physical therapy and exercise. Inactivity for a long time can lead to muscle wasting and hence may cause more pain. 

 

Myth – Sleeping on your stomach can relieve neck pain.

Fact – Sleeping on your stomach puts stress on your neck. Even while sleeping on your back or side, choose a pillow that’s not too high and the one that supports the natural curve of your neck.

 

Myth – Massage can cure your neck pain.

Fact – Although massage may offer pain relief there is little scientific evidence. However, massage could be safe for most people with minor neck strains, as long as it is performed by a trained massage therapist.
