I don’t want to feel alone at Christmas

Being alone during a festive occasion can be quite a dampener. Here is one such story

By Coleen Nolan

I’m on a basic state pension and have been giving my daughter-in-law and son £12 a week so they’ll let me spend Christmas with them, even though they spelled it out that I’d only have the meat, veg and a bottle of wine.

I recently got my cold weather payment and gave them all of it, even though they have good jobs. I now can’t afford to put my fire on. I do have a hot water bottle, but I keep scalding my hands. My grandson comes to visit and if I give him £2 he fills it for me.

I’m now really upset because my daughter-in-law phoned to say they can’t have me for Christmas anymore, but they may let me stay for New Year. I know I’ll be OK but I’m embarrassed because all of my friends are staying with family and although I’m happy for them, I get sad when they show me their nice new presents. My friend gave me a nice warm coat, but she’s fallen out with me because my daughter-in-law took it.

I know many people are in a worse situation than I am. My neighbours have asked me to look after their cat so at least I’ll have him for company. I’m looking forward to that.

Coleen says..

Oh, Nelly, I wish you’d put your address on your letter. I hate the thought of you being on your own at Christmas. What upsets me the most is that you’re still so forgiving of these family members who are taking advantage of you and abusing your kindness.

You must stop giving them money – making you pay to spend Christmas with them is quite simply mental abuse and you don’t deserve that. I really think you need to start confiding more in your friends. Tell them what’s going on and how you’re feeling. I’m sure they’d be horrified and would want to help you.

It’s hard, but you need to find the inner strength to stand up to your family so you’re not paying your grandson £2 to fill up a hot water bottle. You don’t have to pay anyone for kindness.

I’m heartbroken about your story – please let me know how you’re getting on.
