Always have a first aid kit in your home (and a separate one in the car) in case of medical emergencies. Keep it out of reach of kids and in a cool, dry place. Check the contents regularly and restock as necessary. Here’s a list of what you will need...

  • Sterile gauze squares for cleaning wounds

  • A box of adhesive dressings in various sizes

  • Sterile dressings with bandages attached

  • Small and large roller bandages, such as crepe bandages

  • A roll of 2.5cm (1in) hypoallergenic adhesive tape

  • A sterile eye pad with bandage attached

  • Two triangular bandages for slings

  • Safety pins, blunt-ended tweezers and a pair of blunt-ended scissors

  • Disposable gloves

  • Face shield for rescues

  • A tube of antiseptic cream for cuts and grazes

  • A tub of calamine lotion

Other useful items include a digital thermometer, junior paracetamol or ibuprofen syrup, insect repellent, antihistamine syrup and sunscreen with the highest protection factor.
