Cramp is caused when there is a spasm in a muscle, which can feel painful and unexpected. You may experience it during or after exercise, or at night as you try to sleep.
- For relief, stretch and massage the affected muscles. For example, if you suffer from cramp in the calf, sit down and straighten your leg and make sure your foot is supported.
- Try to flex your foot up and down to help stretch the calf muscle and ease any pain.
- Massage, done by yourself or someone with you, can often be effective. Pressure with two fingers or a thumb can be especially soothing.
- Drinking a glass of water with half a teaspoon of salt in it before going to bed can sometimes remedy night cramps.
