People often think that to treat a nosebleed, the head should be tilted back and the nose pinched.
This is a myth and will only encourage the blood to run down the back of your throat and possibly into your stomach, inducing vomiting. It also won’t stop the bleeding. Some also say you should place a cold object on the neck base, which is also an old wives’ tale.
Sit the person down, reassure them and pinch the tip rather than the hard bit of the nose. Discourage them from coughing or swallowing until the bleeding stops. It may help to place a bowl on the floor to catch dripping blood.
In some cases, it’s even better to lay the person on their side in the recovery position, preferably on the floor.
