Children are the most at risk from poisonous plants, since they may be attracted by their berries or seeds and eat them.
Teach your children from an early age never to eat anything they find outside unless an adult says it’s safe.
- If you suspect someone has swallowed a poisonous plant DO NOT induce vomiting, which rarely helps and may even make matters worse.
- If the person is unconscious, check their airway is open and that they’re breathing. Be prepared to resuscitate if necessary.
- Phone for an ambulance or call a doctor.
- Try to find out which plant has been swallowed and, if possible, what part of it was eaten. Keep pieces of the plant and a sample of any vomit to give to the paramedic or doctor.
