Sunburn

Signs and symptoms of sunburn usually appear within a few hours of exposure, bringing pain, redness, swelling and occasional blistering. Because exposure often affects a large area of your skin, sunburn can cause headache, fever and fatigue.

The first thing to do in case of sunburn is to get out of the sun and cover all exposed parts of the body.

For mild sunburn, apply a cool compress over the affected area. The compress should consist of equal parts of milk and water. Burow solution may also be used as a compress. This solution can be purchased at any chemist. The compress should not be applied for more than 15-20 minutes at a time and should be changed every 2-3 hours. A cool bath will also help.

After cooling the area either by a bath or compress, aloe-based lotions should be applied. A light fragrance-free skin moisturiser is also helpful.

If any blisters are formed, they should be left intact. In case of any pain, over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen should be used.

For more sever cases of sunburn, or if any complications occur, the person should be taken to a doctor or a hospital without delay.

The most important thing to remember, though, is to stay out of the sun while sunburned.
