Swallowed foreign objects

Posted On Thursday, October 15, 2009

Generally when you swallow a foreign object, it will pass through your digestive system without much incident. However, some objects can lodge in the oesophagus (food pipe), and can cause choking or such complications.

The object should be removed as quickly as possible from the oesophagus. Pointed objects or tiny batteries can cause local tissue injury and should be removed only by a trained medical professional.

For objects that are blocking the airway or objects other than the type discussed above, the Heimlich manoeuvre should be used without delay.
