Home remedies for jaundice

With just a few simple home remedies and herbal cures, one can combat jaundice effectively

The liver secretes bile juice containing pigments which if absorbed in the bloodstream due to liver malfunction causes deposits in the layers of skin and body giving a yellow color.

Symptoms

  • Extreme weakness 
  • Headache and fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Severe constipation
  • Nausea
  • Yellow discoloration of the eyes, tongue, skin and urine

Recommended diet
A light diet comprising of fresh fruits and vegetables should be followed. For the first two days one can go on a liquid diet to maintain lightness in the body. One should avoid fried and denatured food.

Remedial measures

  • Lemon juice mixed with lukewarm water is highly beneficial.
  • Juice made from the green leaves of radish should be taken daily for proper bowel movements. Sugar and honey can be added for taste. Also lemon juice and pepper sprinkled on radish can cure jaundice in 10-15 days if taken daily.
  • Fresh tomato juice with salt and pepper should be consumed in the morning.
  • Raw green mangoes with honey and pepper help increase the secretion of bile and tones up the liver.
  • One should drink beetroot juice mixed with lime. 
  • Fresh drumstick juice mixed with honey and coconut water is said to be beneficial.
  • Half teaspoon fresh ginger juice mixed with one tablespoon honey, fresh lime juice and mint juice helps in healing jaundice.
  • Arhar juice with salt is to be taken daily.
  • Curd or buttermilk with honey or sugarcane juice mixed with lime can quicken the recovery process.
  • One should drink barley water several times a day and coconut water between two meals.

Herbal cure
Sattvic herbs like jaundice berry, bilwa, bringaraj and punarnava in a juice form are found to be effective in curing jaundice.

Other remedies

  • Moderate exercise in the form of light yoga
  • Fresh air baths with adequate sunshine
  • Hot water enema prevents stagnation of stools
  • Adequate rest for regaining the body’s lost strength
