There are several home treatments for psoriasis and some of them are even recommended by dermatologists.  However, what works for someone else might not work for you.  Those who live with psoriasis suggest, “You have to experiment and devise your own healing plan.”  So here are some home remedies you may incorporate in your treatment:

Healing bath
Traditional healers advocate bathing with water which has a fistful of epsom salt added to it while some prescribe bathing with sea water.  However, doctors recommend bathing, but with plain tepid water, to soften and gently remove the thick psoriasis scales sans damaging the skin.

Emollients to the rescue
Dermatologists are known to prescribe age old emollients like cooking oil, non-irritating body oil, lard and petroleum jelly immediately after a bath.

Naturopaths’ prescription

  • Makhanphal (avocado): Gently apply the avocado oil to the affected parts to get rid of the scales and comfort the skin.
  • Lahsoon (Garlic oil):  At bedtime, gently rub garlic oil onto the dry patch.  It helps reduce itching and lubricates the skin.
  • Karela (bitter gourd):  Consume approximately 200ml fresh bitter gourd juice mixed with a teaspoon of lime juice, on an empty stomach for a period of five to six months. This remedy is claimed to be effective for not only psoriasis but other blood related disorders.

One should wash the aloe vera leaf and cut it into desired lengths. The gel should then be applied on to one side of the leaf and then smeared over the affected area or held in place with a bandage.

This should be preferably done at night as the compress needs to e kept on for a long time. One should remember to clean the area well after removing the compress.
  • Pattagobi (cabbage): Prepare a compress using the thickest and the greenest outer leaves of a cabbage. The cabbage compress is believed to be soothing for psoriasis and other skin eruptions.

Healing Flowers

  • Marigold:  In order to heal scalp psoriasis, one should boil four to five marigold flower heads for two minutes and then massage the scalp gently with that water. This lotion can be washed off with a mild shampoo.
  • Pansy:  Pansy has been used as a medicinal flower since ancient times. One should prepare a paste of the stem and flower of the pansy by adding a little bit of water and apply it to the affected skin.
