The usage of home remedies for the treatment of malaria can be dated years back as they were prescribed by Indian herbalists and practitioners of Ayurvedic medicines. However, in today’s day and age, most doctors refrain from the use of most of these home remedies as a substitute to medical treatment, since malarial fever should not be taken lightly and instead advise patients to use them as a complimentary therapy along with the prescribed medication. Discussed below are a few home remedies which help in comforting and soothing the patient.

Tulsi/Holy Basil Tea
During the monsoons, people are more prone to malaria. This is where grandma’s age old recipe of boiling a few tulsi leaves with tea comes handy, as these leaves act as an excellent preventive against malaria.

All one has to do is add a few tulsi leaves to two cups of water and let it boil till the water level is reduced to half. A quarter cup twice a day helps in healing and preventing malarial fevers. In order to make it little more palatable to the taste buds milk, sugar and cardamom can be added.

Lahsun/Garlic tea
Ten grams of grated garlic is all it takes to give some amount of relief to malaria patients. The grated garlic is mixed with one and a half cups of water and three tablespoons of milk. Let the mixture boil till the quantity is reduced to quarter a cup. Then strain the mixture and consume three tablespoons a day.

Chandan/Sandalwood
Sandalwood works as a great pain reliever and a bit of sandalwood paste applied on the temple not only helps in soothing a headache but also in bringing down malarial fever.

Chakotra/Grape fruit
Grapefruit is often touted as a natural remedy for malaria due to the natural quinine content present. In order to extract the quinine for consumption, one needs to boil a quarter of the grapefruit and then strain the pulp.

Chirayata/Indian Gentian
Chirayata is an Indian herb which is extremely effective when it comes to treating malarial fevers. An infusion can be prepared with 250ml of water, 15gms of the herb, two to three cloves and a bit of cinnamon. One to two tablespoons of this solution is recommended to be had continuously for a span of 20 days.

Adrak/Ginger and Kismis/Raisin Combo
To make the ginger and raisin combo, pour one glass of water in a pan and add a small piece of ginger along with 2-3 teaspoons of raisins. Let the mixture boil till the quantity is reduced to half. Keep the mixture aside to cool for consumption.

Dalchini/Cinnamon
Dalchini has proven to be quite beneficial in treating malaria. Boil a glass of water in a pan along with a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and honey along with a dash of pepper powder. This mixture is to be consumed when warm.
