Home remedies for a sore throat

Here are some more traditional home remedies to comfort and or cure a sore throat

Perhaps we are all aware of salt water gargles to overcome a sore throat. But this ancient home remedy is an excellent preventive too.  It is said that in the olden days, people added a pinch of salt and turmeric to warm water and gargled everyday to keep sore throat at bay. Here are some more traditional home remedies to comfort and or cure a sore throat.

Yummy gargle

To a glass of just boiled water add one teaspoon ginger powder. Let steep. When bearably warm, add a dash of honey and juice of half a lemon. Use the mix to gargle your throat. Repeat a couple of times through the day.

 

Medicinal methi

Gargling with warm Methi seeds treated water is believed to heal a sore throat. Take approximately four teaspoon methi seeds in a quart of water and bring to boil. Allow to simmer over a low flame for a while. Cool to bearable warmth. Strain and use the water to gargle.


Healing jeera
Boil a glass of water with a teaspoon of jeera and a piece of ginger. Simmer for a few minutes. Allow to cool to a bearable temperature.  Gargle to soothe a sore throat.

 

Mehndi medicine

And you thought this herb was only used to dye, condition your hair and ornament your palms and feet! Some villagers are known to use a decoction of the leaves for gargling to help heal a sore throat.

 

Cinnamon and cardamom combo

An infusion of elaichi and dalchini when used for gargling in case of a sore throat is said to be very soothing and healing. A pinch of pepper powder and a few drops of honey may be added to enhance its curative powers.

 

Clove cure

This popular spice housed in every kitchen proves curative in various ailments. Chewing a clove along with some rock salt or crystals of common salt is a common remedy for relieving irritation that is caused by a sore throat.

 

Blessings of holy basil

There are folks who vouch for the efficacy of holy basil in case of a simple sore throat. Water boiled with tulsi leaves can be consumed taking gentle sips in case of a sore throat. Some prefer to gargle with it and find it helpful.

 

Turmeric treatment
Known for its antiseptic properties, turmeric is a popular house hold medicine in cases of many ailments. One-fourth teaspoon of turmeric powder boiled in a cup of milk is an effective grandma’s remedy for a sore throat.

 

Natural antibiotic

Garlic is claimed to be a simple, safe and yet highly potent remedy for mild infection of the throat. Chew and swallow a flake of garlic. Do not eat or drink any thing for the next one hour atleast.
