The joy of being pregnant is often clouded by pregnancy related ailments. Here are some home remedies to ease your journey to motherhood

“It is not necessary that all pregnant women experience the same symptoms and ailments. Every pregnancy is unique in a way. Likewise, one mom-to-be may find her morning sickness is reduced by having rice gruel while another may puke at the very thought of it. It is always wise to check with your doctor to rule out any serious or major underlying health condition during pregnancy, before resorting to home cures,” say gynaecologists.

Morning Sickness

This unwelcome sign of pregnancy is usually caused by hormonal changes, low blood sugar level and dehydration. Since very early times, seasoned women folk around the mother-to-be have resorted to simple natural methods and remedies to reduce the severity of her morning sickness.

 

Unripe green mangoes

This is a traditional Indian remedy for morning sickness. Eat a couple of small raw mangoes with a dash of salt and honey (optional).

 

Ginger

You will find midwives across the world who will vouch for the efficacy of this common herb in treating morning sickness. In India, half a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice mixed with a teaspoon each of lime juice, mint juice and honey is claimed to be a potent cure for morning sickness. Else where, ginger tea, ale, biscuits or even simply inhaling the fragrance of the herb is claimed to alleviate the symptom.

 

Mint

Consuming juice of mint leaves along with a teaspoon of limejuice and a dash of honey is known to heal nausea.

 

Tomato

Having a glass of tomato juice with a dash of salt and pepper to taste, first thing in the morning is believed to combat morning sickness.

 

Limes and lemons

Having boiled water with a slice of fresh lime is refreshing, hydrates the body and keeps mornings sickness at bay for some. Some are helped by simply sniffing lemon leaves or rind.

 

Other Suggestions

  • It is said exhaustion can also cause morning sickness. Getting enough sleep is mandatory.
  • Rise and get slowly out of bed after sleep or long rest as sudden movements are likely to cause nausea.
  • Do not keep your stomach empty for long hours. Have small meals or snacks five or six times through out the day.
  • Identify and keep away from odours that bring on the nausea.

Constipation and haemorrhoids

Constipation is quite common during pregnancy and may lead to haemorrhoids. Having a fibre rich diet and sufficient water is crucial. Including prunes in the diet is very helpful.

 

Oedema

Swelling in the feet, ankles, fingers and sometimes on the face due to fluid accumulation is also a common pregnancy related ailment. Restricting salt in the diet, drinking sufficient water, taking time out to rest with feet up often through out the day and opting to sit, rather than stand whenever possible, provides relief. two to three times a day is also a valuable remedy for oedema.

 

Emotional upheavals

Deep breathing, yoga and meditation are time-tested allies of a mother-to-be. Pregnancy brings in its wake, hitherto unknown emotions and feelings. Yoga and meditation help restore serenity and provide a holistic perspective to the woman covering a new milestone.
