Freedom from Tobacco – Bengaluru Unites

Tobacco Free Bangalore has organised a cultural and educational event on 31 May, World No Tobacco Day at Freedom Park, Bangalore. Read on to know what the event has to offer


As part of the Global Awareness Campaign, on World No Tobacco Day a unique initiative has been launched by medical doctors for the citizens of Bangalore. With the primary intention of creating anti-tobacco awareness, this cultural and educational event “Freedom from Tobacco - Bengaluru unites” is being held at the Freedom Park on May 31 from 10am-8pm.

The event flow consists of the following activities.

  • Educational poster presentations by the medical fraternity on Awareness and Tobacco Control. Park Area
  • Awareness programme, individual counselling sessions by doctors and health Workers at People’s Plaza Area Freedom Park. 
  • Live music performances and cultural activities by doctors and various artists at the main amphitheatre in Freedom Park

Entry to the event is free to the general public and is an ideal opportunity for a tobacco consumer to get extensive information and immediate help for a positive start. NGOs and other organizations are also invited to register and participate.

Every year more than 5 million people in India succumb to tobacco related heart and lung disease or cancer. India is presently having the largest number of oral cancers in the world. Hence, tobacco control may be imperative to improve the health perspectives in the country. According to Dr Vishal Rao, head and neck cancer surgeon “We as doctors can save more lives by working towards tobacco control than by treating the diseases caused by it in a life time.”

The event is a part of the ongoing initiative to build a Tobacco Free Bengaluru, more details of this initiative is available at www.tobaccofreebangalore.com. This event is conducted under the aegis of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Indian Medical Association (IMA), Indian Dental Association (IDA), Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Institute of Public Health and various other national and international organizations working on tobacco control.  Times Wellness and Bangalore Mirror are the online health and media partners respectively.
