If your midriff is feeling a little lardy, blame it on all those lemonades.

Research has shown that 15% of women's bodies do not recognise the calories taken in from soft drinks, so they tend to eat more. A team at Oxford Brookes University gave 25 men and 25 women a high calorie drink an hour before an allyou-can eat buffet lunch. Almost none of the men over-ate, compared with 15% of the women.

Professor Jeya Henry, who led the research, said: "Men's bodies detect liquid calories, so they are less prone to overeating, but some women were less able to detect calories in drinks so they consumed more at mealtimes."
