'Fat-burner' antioxidant in grapefruit can help to treat diabetes

Here's another study that tells you why grapefruit is great for you. Naringenin, an antioxidant which gives grapefruit its bitter taste, can do the same job as two separate drugs currently used to manage Type 2 diabetes, Israeli scientists have said.

Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce enough of the hormone insulin to properly regulate blood-sugar levels. Naringenin helps to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. It also helps sufferers maintain a healthy weight, which is a vital part of diabetes treatment.

Following a meal the blood is flushed with sugars, causing the liver to create fatty acids, or lipids, for long-term storage. Weight gain puts diabetics at risk of health problems and reduces the effectiveness of insulin. The scientists found that naringenin makes the liver burn fat instead of storing it.

They said its effect mimics the action of Fenofibrate and Rosiglitazone, two lipid-lowering drugs which are used to help control Type-2 diabetes. The study’s author Yaakov Nahmias, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, hailed naringenin as a ‘remarkable’ treatment for diabetes.

"Chemicals like naringenin were long sought after by the pharmaceutical industry, but their development was plagued by safety concerns. This is a step forward but we shouldn’t get carried away that eating large amounts of grapefruit will be a magic bullet – it won’t,’ Nahmias is reported to have said.

Why grapefruit is good for you?
Grapefruit is an excellent source of many nutrients and phytochemicals that contribute to a healthy diet. Grapefruit is a good source of vitamin C, contains the fiber pectin, and the pink and red hues contain the beneficial antioxidant lycopene. Studies have shown grapefruit helps lower cholesterol, and there is evidence that the seeds have antioxidant properties.

The grapefruit diet and why it is unhealthy
The grapefruit diet, also known as the Hollywood Diet is a short-term fad diet that has existed in the United States since at least the 1930s. Specifics of the diet vary widely, but it usually involves eating half a grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice with each meal and significantly reducing caloric intake, often to below 800 calories per day.  Based on the claim that grapefruit has a fat-burning enzyme or similar property, the diet is considered unhealthy and potentially dangerous.
