Common eye ailments and eye allergies

Most of us experience temporary eye problems. Here are some of the most common ailments and their symptoms

Most of us experience temporary eye problems from time to time. Most of these problems are short lived and go away with no complications. However, a doctor should be consulted for these sudden eye problems which last for a couple of days.

Almost all eye allergies have similar symptoms. Below are the most common symptoms.

  • Eye twitching: This can occur at any time and in all age groups. Twitching of the eye can be associated with stress and fatigue, caffeine ,panic disorder or conjunctivitis (pink eye).
  • An itchy eye: This can be caused by eyelid inflammation like styes, dry eye syndromes, allergies, insect bites and conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis can be highly contagious, thus, it is advisable to avoid contact with a pink eye patient and maintain hygiene.
  • Floaters: If one sees spots in ones vision or strands that move with eye movements one should surely consult an eye specialist to rule out conditions such as detachment, diabetes, posterior vitreous detachment  and stroke.
  • Blurry vision: This can be caused due to various conditions. Sometimes fatigue or illness can cause the vision to be temporarily blurred.
  • Tired eyes: With computers being used so regularly these days nearly all professionals have tired eyes. The common conditions are dry eye syndromes and computer vision syndrome.

General Tips

  • Wash your hands regularly if your eyes are infected or recently operated upon. Do not to touch or finger the eyes.
  • Use eye drops like tear substitutes to prevent dryness and for washing out the allergens.
  • Avoid putting make up close to the eyes. Do not share make up.
  • Cold compresses are soothing.
  • All injuries, red eyes or sudden change in vision should be checked by your eye doctor.
  • Contact lens wearers can develop an allergy or intolerance to the lens due to over use of lenses and poor disinfection or hygiene.
  • Do not use drops with steroids unless under medical supervision. Long terms use of steroids can cause steroid induced cataract and glaucoma.
  • Do not buy medicines from chemists directly without consulting your ophthalmologist. Avoid self prescription.
